Easy-to-Make Face Scrubs to Improve Your Skin

Easy-to-Make Face Scrubs to Improve Your Skin

Looking for a way to ensure that your facial serum or moisturizer delivers maximum benefits to your skin? Using a facial scrub 1-2 times a week will help.

Scrubs help remove ingrained dirt and dead skin cells resulting in softer and smoother looking skin. They also help minimize the appearance of wrinkles. The best thing about scrubs is that they enhance your skin’s ability to better absorb the nutrients in natural skin care products such as a facial serum or moisturizer. An added benefit is that your makeup will look better too.

Many over the counter scrubs can contain plastics, synthetic fragrances, parabens, phthalates, and other questionable ingredients that can potentially damage to your skin. Why not make your own with ingredients from your kitchen?

Here are two of our favorite DIY natural face scrubs. Most face scrub recipes are two parts exfoliate to one part oil. Remember these scrubs contain natural ingredients and no preservatives, so they don’t last long. If you don’t use the scrub right away, keep it in the fridge for a few days or add some vitamin E oil to extend the shelf life even longer. If you have vitamin E capsules - poke a hole in one with a clean pin and squeeze contents into your scrub.

Sugar Scrub

¼ Cup Avocado Oil

½ Cup Sugar

15-20 drops Lavender Essential Oil (optional)

Directions:

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mix to an even consistency.

Vanilla Brown Sugar Scrub

¼ Cup Avocado Oil

½ Cup Brown Sugar

1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

Directions:

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mix to an even consistency.

We love sugar scrubs because the granules seem to be finer and less abrasive when used on the face. Many types of oils can be used (almond, olive, jojoba); we prefer avocado oil because it is highly moisturizing and it is high in omega fatty acids, vitamins A, E, and D and amino acids.

As with most facial care products, there are a few tips to enhance the experience.

  1. Wash your hands so you don’t spread bacteria and dirt on your face
  2. Wash your face with a natural facial cleanser
  3. Wet your face with warm water
  4. Using your fingertips gently apply the scrub in a circular motion (avoid the eyes)
  5. Rinse with warm water and gently pat your face dry with a clean towel
  6. Apply a natural facial serum or moisturizer to your face
