Your Guide to Natural Skin Care Ingredients

Your Guide to Natural Skin Care Ingredients

Do you ever feel overwhelmed when you shop for skin care products? With all the flashy advertisements and claims it can be confusing, to say the least. Well, you are not alone. In this guide, we will focus on specific ingredients that give you beautiful, healthy, and radiant skin.

Before we get started let’s cover four basic categories of what to look for when evaluating active ingredients.

01 | Antioxidants

This is a very common word used when discussing healthy foods. Did you know that antioxidants also play an important role in our skin care and the appearance of your skin? Most notably, they can counter free radicals that can damage skin cells and they help slow down the appearance of aging. These nutrients are typically found in botanical ingredients.

02 | Omega-Rich Fatty Acids

Most of us know these are valuable in our diet but they are also great when added to our skin care and they are great for all skin types. omega-rich fatty acids are responsible for the appearance of an even, healthy, and radiant complexion. The most vital omega fatty acids for your skin are omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9.

03 | Emollients and Moisturizers

Emollients and moisturizers are the most common sought out ingredients in skin care. These ingredients are generally used to combat dryness by adding moisture to skin. They soften and soothe, and help keep the skin moist and supple by reducing water loss.

04 | Exfoliates

Exfoliation is an important step in any skin care regimen that helps maintain radiant skin through the removal of the dead skin cells on the skin’s surface.

Here Are Some of Our Favorite Ingredients:

Abyssinian Oil – is high in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids - absorbs quickly and is highly moisturizing, providing a smooth layer of protection against dehydration.

Acai Fruit Oil – is high in omega fatty acids, phytosterols, vitamin C, and polyphenols – it has great antioxidant and revitalizing properties.

Argan Oil – the quality of all argan oils is not the same. Look for one that is derived through a natural, gentle, and solvent-free process that yields the highest quality oil — it is rich in omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E.

Avocado Oil – high in omega-3, omega-6, omega-9 fatty acids — it is a rich oil that absorbs quickly and leaves the skin feeling moisturized, pampered, and smooth.

Bentonite Clay – is enriched with minerals — it helps remove toxins and impurities, soothes the skin, revives dullness, and helps nourish the skin.

3-0 Ethyl Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) – is a powerful antioxidant that helps reduce the appearance of skin damage. This form of Vitamin C is produced to increase its stability and prevent it from easily degrading, which is common with ascorbic acid.

Geranium Oil – helps maintain oil balance of the skin. It also helps in boosting and improving the elasticity of the skin.

Green Tea Extract – has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties — helps reduce the appearance of skin damage and photo-aging.

Hemp Seed Oil – easily absorbs and is rich in vitamins and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids — it is rejuvenating, protecting, and moisturizing, leaving the skin feeling soft and toned.

Jojoba Oil – is high in omega-9 fatty acids, vitamin E, copper, selenium, zinc, chromium, and silicon — it absorbs quickly because it is similar to our own skin’s sebum — acts as a moisturizer and an emollient that helps to improve elasticity and suppleness — helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and leaves the skin feeling soft.

Kaolin Clay – helps remove dead skin cells and has purifying and detoxifying properties.

Licorice Root Extract – has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties — helps reduce the appearance of skin damage.

Marula Seed Oil – contains high levels of omega-9 fatty acids and natural antioxidants and improves skin hydration and provides protection from environmental stressors.

Olive Squalane – is a natural emollient, moisturizer, and antioxidant — leaves the skin feeling soft and helps restore the natural protective barrier properties against environmental stress.

Rose Hip Fruit Oil – is nourishing, protective, rejuvenating, and moisturizing, and has also shown beneficial effects on photo-aged skin — it’s high in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and it contains natural retinoic acid, tannins, flavonoids, vitamin C, and beta-carotene.

Safflower Oil – is a rich source of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and is high in omega-6 fatty acids — acts as a moisturizer, helps remove dead skin cells, and has purifying and detoxifying properties.

Silt (Muds – Not Clay) – is a natural material from freshwater sediments that spreads easily – rich in fatty acids and provides nourishment — regular use imparts freshness, firmness, and uniformity to the skin. This can be hard to find but the one we like best is from Pelavie.

Sodium Hyaluronate – is a natural humectant — look for both high and low molecular weights because they create a synergetic effect — maintains the correct water balance of the skin and helps to maintain the integrity of the barrier function of the skin — it also absorbs easily and is highly moisturizing.

Sunflower Seed Oil – absorbs easily and is high in omega-6 and vitamin E and is highly moisturizing.

Ylang Ylang Oil – helps maintain moisture and oil balance of the skin and helps the skin look hydrated, smooth and young.
